August 2008 Newsletter

Who said in summer things slow down? Centru Tbexbix was in full swing throughout the month of August, the second month of daily Summer Club. Enjoy the news!

Theatrical expression

August saw the return of Stefania, the juggling clown from Italy, who was with us in May. This time she brought three other Italian clowns Daniele, Sara and Genny, from the association Viviamo In Positivo. For one week under their guidance, the children experimented and learned how to express themselves in different ways.
The clowns themselves performed various shows and taught the children a number of clown acts and exercises. These exercises were aimed at stimulating their fantasy and creativity, and increasing the children's self-confidence and imagination. The classes consisted of group activities, with an emphasis on communication, socializing and becoming aware of the need to establish positive relationships and mutual respect.

The success of this visit was clear when all our children enthusiastically performed short clown acts with faces painted. All of them went home with a red nose, the symbol of clowns.

Another interesting activity this month was a session with professional storyteller Rita Borg. It was inspiring to see our three youngest age groups, i.e. four to six-year olds, listening and becoming involved in the stories that Rita was reading. Rita Borg is an author of children's stories and has published bi-lingual (Maltese/English) reading books which are very appealing to the youngest readers.

Hera Outing

40 children together with a few parents and staff enjoyed a relaxing day on a trip to Comino, sponsored by Hera cruises. The weather was pleasantly calm with hardly any swell, luckily for all of us. Santa Maria Bay was ideal for our little kids to swim in and play with the inflatable toys provided by our Lawrence. Hearty thanks to our sponsors who even provided sandwiches, fruit and ice-cream.

Summer Club closure

The main event at the end of this month was the closure of the Summer Club. All the parents came to see their children perform on stage, something that is becoming a regular event which consolidates the learning that takes place in the main programmes of Centru Tbexbix, be it the after school programmes or the Summer Club.

The performance reflected the main theme of this year's Summer Club, which was environmental protection, with a special focus on recycling. The children sang songs, danced and acted confidently to their tutors' satisfaction! In preparation for this all the groups painted the backdrop for their own items, as well as took care to prepare all the props. The result was a big improvement from our previous show!

With the Summer Club drawing to an end, some of the volunteers return to their countries of residence. Purna and Esin have returned to Turkey and Erik will go back to London. The children and staff will miss them, yet we're happy that they go home with a feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment. At the end of the Summer Club Experience, all volunteers without exception expressed that they learned a lot and are happy to witness so much positive change and joy in the children.

Media Exposure

A touch of Neo-Humanism in the Heart of Cospicua was the title of an article by Francesca Vella published on Sunday 10th August in the Malta Independent. Carrying a photo of a few of our children in the "tree" yoga pose, the article provided a very positive review of what is happening at Centru Tbexbix, including comments by a few of the parents.

One week later a team from the tv programme Kalamita spent two and a half hours filming the children during the summer club activities, and recorded nine short slots about the various aspects of our project, to be broadcast from first October on a regular basis. This is the second year that Kalamita has shown such interest in our project. Watch out for Rodianne, one of our parents as well as children and staff of Centru Tbexbix on your tv screens from October J

Innovative Support Ideas

One day this month after the kids had left the doorbell rang. Didi opened and someone stood at the door, with an envelope in his hand. "I was here for your last fundraising dinner, and was impressed by the work you're doing for our children. Yesterday was my birthday, and I decided that the amount I spend on food and drinks for my party, I donate to Centru Tbexbix. Here's your cheque".

The director and committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all our benefactors. Your support is much appreciated and enables us to maintain and expand the programmes offered to the children of Bormla.
