November/December 2011 NewsletterBookmark and Share

Welcome to the  Centru Tbexbix newsletter of November/December 2011.

The last two months of the year 2011 were quite eventful. Read on for what happened at Centru Tbexbix during November and December. Thanks to Niky for compiling this newsletter.

Magical Weekend

For the second time this year we organized a residential weekend this time at the Marsaxlokk Youth
hostel. The topic chosen was ''magic school''.

Among the activities, the children were involved in deciding values which describe the 'ethos' of their team, painting their magical world, a quiz about Maltese culture as well as preparing for the much

awaited performance on Saturday evening! A walk to the Marsaxlokk beach was part of the program,

as well as yoga and relaxation. The children had different duties like helping in cooking and cleaning.

Meal times were always a big satisfaction.  All children without exception were happy to eat healthy
vegetarian food!

Special thanks to the Ministry of Education for sponsoring this activity.

Together is More Fun!

In November the volunteers planned more collective activities for the children, who enjoyed making candles (the elder ones) and kites (the younger children)

Decorating the center is an ongoing activity. The children were guided to create new decorations, adding some winter colors and Christmas streamers, colorful trees, etc. In line with our principles, the children were encouraged to use recycled material for decoration, making Christmas cards, wrapping presents, etc.

Meanwhile David is continuing with gardening and kids are learning how to take care of the plants and appreciate the beauty of nature, even if just in the small gardeninCentru Tbexbix.

Nature Friendly

Purchasing a composter was a natural follow-up. Our remains of vegetables and fruit are now going straight on the roof into our compost bin, and it was interesting for the children to learn about its benefits Thanks to the Bormla Local Council for sponsoring it.

In the beginning of November our EVS volunteers attended a training organised by the EUPA. All of them were happy to get to know other EVS volunteers working in Malta and their organisations. They also learned about the objectives of EVS and participatedin preparation and evaluation meetings.

Wish You All the Best Cristina!

Another team  member had to leave us… Our volunteer Cristina who was here for more than one year, went back to Spain. Her next phase will be in a primary school in Sicily where she will continue teaching

pupils. We are grateful for her contribution, mostly with her creativity in arts and crafts lessons. Both staff and children miss her a lot. She writes:

It is very difficult to explain in a few words an experience of over one year. I remember before coming how much I was wishing to work in the Centru Tbexbix. I was reading the newsletters, learning about the center, the tree, the activities that the children were doing, and I could see myself there. I think I was insisting very much, doing whatever I could, even sending mails with the letters in different colors. Coming to Malta wasn't easy for me. I had to take a decision without knowing how long I could stay, but finally it turned out to be one of my best decisions. This is the best example that our dreams can become reality. Being a volunteer in Centru Tbexbix gave me a lot of things. I discovered how much I like the children and how much you can learn from and with them. I felt that my heart is becoming bigger. I'm very grateful for this nice experience, grateful to Kamala for being there every time that we needed her and worked hard, to Arianna and Lucia for helping me discover Malta, to Didis, Dadas and Iishana for sharing all their knowledge and to all the other volunteers for sharing a nice time together ... And of course I am very grateful to all the children that are coming to Centru Tbexbix and making the centru part of their life. All the children that I met have very good skills in different subjects (art, performance, languages, dancing...). I can see some of them in the future being part of the volunteer members and I can see some as teachers. Centru Tbexbix lives because all of you are participating in the activities that the volunteers are planning with dedication and love. I ended my volunteering with an enjoyable weekend in Marsaxlokk. For me it was a gift to be there and to share time with all of you, my last time as a volunteer there. You are in my heart. Thank you for being such special persons....

Jingle Bells Calling Christmas

In preperation for the Christmas party, Niky and Alice taught the children some dance routines, while Sophie taught gymnastic movements and hoola hoop skills. David introduced some drumming techniques,

while Sonja brought  the kitchen to life with baking cookies. Deborah again joined us to bring out the
children’s singing  potential.    As  usual,  the  kids  enjoyed  dressing  up  for  the  occasion  !

For the children one big satisfaction is to perform for their parents, and quite a good number of them turned up this time.

Apart from our Christmas party,..... an added bonus from Ivan and volunteers of Zion Reggae Bar in Marsascala who invited our children to a party which they enjoyed very much .

Thanks to those who joined the scheme: Friends of Centru Tbexbix, which is still open to anyone who would like to start a standing order and benefit from free yoga classes and reduced prices for our fundraising dinners.
