October 2008 Newsletter
October has been an exciting month, enjoy reading the news!
"Close to Nature"
During the last weekend of October a residential weekend for the children of Centru Tbexbix was held for the second time this year. Whereas the May edition included one night only, this time we decided to extend the programme and start on Friday. From Friday to Sunday our growing CT Family lived, ate, sang, danced and played together in the YTC Bungalow in Buskett.
The theme was "Close to Nature":
Close to the green nature around - What a joy to see the children running among the green in leafy Buskett.
Close to the true nature of humans, in harmony and as a family. The best comment to show this came from one of the oldest girls, who realised, after getting to spend timewith a boy from a "notorious" family, that he was actually a nice guy! Programmes such as these can build bridges and reduce social division by providing a place for those who do not commonly interact (and hence who stay at different ends of the social spectrum) to be and work together.
Close to the natural state of joy and playfulness. Pamela's outdoor activities were a favourite and even the weather remained well until an hour before departure.
Close to the human nature of compassion, with healthy vegetarian food the whole weekend (and yes, they did eat their veggies!).
Close to their natural confidence in spirited performances prepared during classes with Natasha and others. A setting to exhibit and present their work is a great motivator for learning, and the performances of original choreography was the proof of this. It was such a big hit that the children made us promise to include it in the next residential weekend. And with the papier mache classes of Jana and Maria their innate creativity found expression too!
With thanks to General Soft Drinks and Malta Dairy Products for their in kind donations.
Back at Centru Tbexbix, as is our normal procedure, we spent half of the first class following the residential weekend to evaluate the whole event, with the main feedback being extracted from the children themselves.
EVS – coming and going
Earlier this month we welcomed Natasha, our new EVS volunteer from Russia, who brings with her a lot of personal experiences from previous projects and volunteering. We said goodbye to Maria from Germany, who had become an efficient English Club assistant and lastly we had a visit from Cindy from France, who will be starting her EVS period with us in February and came to meet us for a first hand experience before committing. Cindy's visit and positive impression increased her motivation and she looks forward to join us, along with three others in February.
And by the way...
All of this was just on top of our weekly regular programmes of English, arts & crafts, sports, drama and play. Currently 51 children are enrolled and are attending 2-4 times a week.
Fundraising events coming up
With November already started, the preparations for the upcoming fundraising events are in full swing.
A bazaar will be held on 8 & 9 November, of which the proceeds will go towards the purchase of a small PA system to be used in the performances of our budding artists.
Bookings for the vegetarian dinner on Saturday 22 November have been coming in steadily. Funds raised will be used for shelving in several of the classrooms. Please call 21/27805130 or email on email@example.com to book your seat, there are still some spaces left.
There are many different ways to contribute to the success of Centru Tbexbix. Through volunteering (in classes, administration, odd jobs, maintenance - in fact a handyman is needed at present!), donations in kind or financially, etc. The opportunities are endless.
For more information on how you can help, call us on 21/27 805130 or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
This newsletter will be coming to you every end of the month, with the intention of keeping regular contact with the growing circle of friends of Centru Tbexbix, keeping everyone informed of what is happening as well as sharing the inspiration of this blossoming community project.
